National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship 

“The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and in STEM education.  The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM and STEM education.  NSF especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, and veterans to apply. NSF also encourages undergraduate seniors to apply.”

National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship

“The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance).”

Sigma Delta Epsilon Fellowships for Women  *

“The GWIS National Fellowships Program is proud to offer fellowships to help increase knowledge in the fundamental sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women. Endowment funds, mostly generated from bequests, provide the annual income that supports scientific research done by SDE/GWIS award winners. For the 2014-2015 funding cycle, we distributed approximately $75,000 in fellowships funds to 10 deserving women scientists.”

Phi Beta Kappa Scholarships for Outstanding Graduate Students  

Phi Beta Kappa Graduate Scholarship awards are given to twelve graduate students in the amount of $5,000 each. The selection criteria are based on 1) demonstrable evidence that the applicant has discovered something significant in the field of study, has found an original concept, has made an original contribution, or has found an innovative way to apply existing knowledge; 2) the applicant’s description of major accomplishments; and 3) a serious plan for future innovative endeavor with reasonable expectation of being able to fulfill it.

Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program 

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding scholarship and encourages independent graduate level research — particularly by female and minority students — in NOAA mission-related sciences of oceanography, marine biology and maritime archaeology, including all science, engineering and resource management of ocean and coastal areas. Scholarship selections are based on academic excellence, letters of recommendations, research and career goals and financial need.”

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship

“Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on behalf of the Ford Foundation. American Association of University Women

“American Fellowships support women scholars who are completing dissertations, planning research leave from accredited institutions, or preparing research for publication. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.”

Cota Robles Fellowship

“These state-funded, merit-based fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to first-year graduate students who have overcome significant social or educational obstacles to achieve a college education, and whose backgrounds equip them to contribute to intellectual diversity among the graduate student population. The Cota-Robles fellowship provides a stipend during the regular academic year of $21,000 plus payment of all university fees (except non-resident tuition); for the summer quarter, a $3,000 stipend is awarded. The Cota-Robles Fellowship is part of a five-year total support package with the department providing support for years three and four and Graduate Division providing support for years one, two, and five. Fellowship recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.”
